Gervonta Davis has opened the door to a potential fight with Jake Paul. The WBA lightweight champion expressed his willingness to face the social media star turned boxer in a recent interview.
Davis, known as 'Tank', is getting ready to defend his 135-pound title against Lamont Roach in March at the Barclays Center in New York. The fight will mark Davis' return to the ring since his impressive knockout win over Frank Martin last June. That victory pushed Davis' unbeaten record to 30-0, with Martin suffering his first professional loss.
Meanwhile, Jake Paul has been making waves in the boxing world. He recently grabbed headlines by defeating Mike Tyson in an exhibition bout last November. The fight saw the 58-year-old Tyson return to the ring for the first time since 2005, but he couldn't keep up with the younger Paul over eight two-minute rounds.
After his win over Tyson, Paul has caught the attention of some big names in boxing. Artur Beterbiev, the undisputed light-heavyweight champion, and Daniel Dubois, the IBF heavyweight champion, have both shown interest in facing him.
When asked about the possibility of fighting Jake Paul, Davis didn't hesitate. In an interview with Curran Bhatia, he said:
"Yeah. Tell him this is my callout. Jake Paul what up? What up Jake Paul?"
While Davis seems game for the fight, there's a big obstacle: the weight difference. Davis currently fights at 135 pounds, while Paul weighed in at 227 pounds for his bout with Tyson. That's a difference of nearly 100 pounds, making the matchup unlikely to happen.
Davis has also talked about his plans to retire at the end of 2025 after three more fights. He didn't mention Paul as part of those retirement fight plans.
For now, Davis is focusing on his upcoming title defense against Roach. The fight will be his first since his knockout win over the previously unbeaten Martin in June. As for Paul, he'll likely continue to seek out high-profile opponents as he works to establish himself in the boxing world.
