Gervonta Davis has surprised fans by announcing his plan to retire from boxing at the end of 2025. The WBA lightweight champion dropped this bombshell during a press conference for his upcoming title defense.
Davis will face Lamont Roach in March at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The fight marks the first step in Davis' plan to wrap up his career with three more bouts before hanging up his gloves.
After Roach, Davis wants to square off against Ryan Garcia again. Their first clash in April 2023 ended with Davis scoring a knockout win in the seventh round. Davis floored Garcia twice during that fight.
"I'd like to fight Ryan Garcia again in the summer of 2025,"Davis said during an interview with Fight Hub TV.
Garcia is currently serving a one-year ban after failing a drug test. He'll be eligible to return to the ring in April 2025, setting up a potential rematch with Davis a few months later.
For his final fight, Davis has his sights set on WBO super-lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez. Lopez claimed the title in June 2023 by defeating Josh Taylor and has successfully defended it twice since then.
When asked about facing Lopez, Davis didn't mince words:
"Yeah I'd do Teo. I'll slap the sh*t out of him when I see him."
Boxing fans have long discussed a potential clash between Davis and Lopez. The matchup has generated significant interest in the boxing community, with experts and fans alike speculating on the outcome.
An unnamed boxer who has stepped into the ring with both Davis and Lopez has offered a prediction for this potential fight, adding fuel to the speculation.
Davis' retirement announcement and his list of desired opponents have certainly got fans talking. With less than two years left in his career, according to his timeline, every fight from now on will carry extra weight as the clock ticks down on "Tank's" time in the ring.
