Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. are moving closer to a big fight. The sons of two British boxing legends might face off in early 2025, continuing their fathers' rivalry from the 1990s.
The boxers were set to fight in October 2022, but Benn tested positive for a banned substance. This put the match on hold and started a long legal battle for Benn to get his boxing license back.
While dealing with these issues, Benn fought twice in the United States, winning both fights on points. Eubank Jr. had his own challenges, losing to Liam Smith by knockout before evening the score in a rematch.
The rivalry heated up in October 2024 when Benn and Eubank Jr. had a face-off in the ring after Benn beat Kamil Szeremeta. They've also clashed before in Saudi Arabia, adding fuel to the fire for a potential matchup.
This week, Benn said he's now free to fight. Eddie Hearn, the promoter, hinted that the fight could happen in early 2025. It's the closest we've been to seeing this match since it fell through in 2022.
Former world champion Amir Khan shared his thoughts on the fight with The Stomping Ground. He pointed out the weight difference as the main issue:
"Conor will be thicker and bigger. Benn will change his training. Eubank is quicker but it depends on the dancing partner you've got."
Khan thinks Eubank will win:
"Eubank has the height and range advantage. Benn likes to fight close. Eubank can keep it long and outbox him. Benn, up the weight, likely won't be able to knock out Eubank."
On power, Khan said:
"Eubank doesn't carry the power that he should. Benn will hold a lot of power, might be even stronger at the same weight. Once Benn goes up, they carry the same power."
The fight will be emotional, given the family history. Benn usually fights as a welterweight, while Eubank Jr. has gone as high as super-middleweight. This weight difference will be a key factor in how the fight plays out.
