Toney, who ruled the super-middleweight division from 1993 to 1994, has been critical of Alvarez lately. In a recent interview with ES News, Toney predicted that Crawford would knock out Canelo if they were to meet in the ring.
Crawford currently holds the WBA Super-Welterweight belt and would need to move up two weight classes to face Alvarez. Despite this, he's still hoping for a shot at the Mexican star.
Toney's prediction for a potential Benavidez-Canelo matchup was even more emphatic. Speaking to FightHub TV, the boxing legend said:
"Benavidez is a bad boy. He wants to fight, he's trying to f**k you up. They are the type of fighters I like. Everyone knows how James Toney used to fight, we're coming for the lights out."
Toney didn't hold back in his assessment of Canelo's willingness to face Benavidez:
"Canelo has little nuts. That's all it is, he's scared to death, he is scared. Canelo knows that if he fights Benavidez then he's getting knocked out – he's going to sleep! It doesn't matter when he fights him, if he fights him right now he'll steam roll him."
Benavidez is currently campaigning at light-heavyweight and has a fight lined up with David Morrell in January.
Alvarez's knockout power has been on display throughout his career. He's put away notable opponents like Sergey Kovalev, Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders, Amir Khan, and James Kirkland. His victory over Kovalev was particularly significant, as it made him a four-division world champion.
As Canelo searches for his next opponent, fans and pundits alike will be eager to see if he takes on either Crawford or Benavidez to prove Toney wrong.
