Gervonta Davis has put his upcoming fight on hold. The WBA Lightweight World Champion was set to defend his title against Lamont Roach Jr on December 14, but that's no longer happening.
Davis, known as 'Tank', told fans the fight will likely take place in January instead. The 29-year-old from Baltimore didn't give a specific reason for the delay.
"January I'm hearing," Davis said about the new date.
This postponement means Davis will probably only step into the ring once in 2024. He last fought in June, stopping Frank Martin in what was his first title defense since being named full champion on January 2.
Roach Jr, the current WBA Super Featherweight World Champion, won his title in November 2023 by beating Hector Luis Garcia. He's got a solid record of 25 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, with 10 knockouts to his name.
Davis and Roach have a bit of history. They faced each other as amateurs back in 2011, with Davis winning on points. Now, they're set to meet again as pros, but fans will have to wait a bit longer.
There's talk that the delay might be to make the fight card stronger. Some people think it could be paired with the much-talked-about light-heavyweight clash between David Benavidez and David Morrell. But that's not confirmed yet.
Davis has had a tricky time finding opponents lately. Vasiliy Lomachenko, the IBF Lightweight Champion, was in the mix but pulled out, saying he wasn't motivated. Fans were also pushing for a fight with WBC Lightweight Champion Shakur Stevenson, but that didn't happen either.
For now, boxing fans will have to be patient. The Davis vs Roach Jr fight is still on, just not as soon as everyone thought.
