Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is looking for his next opponent, but his trainer Eddy Reynoso has firmly shut the door on Chris Eubank Jr.
Canelo, the unified super-middleweight champion, plans to return to the ring in May 2025. He's coming off two unanimous decision wins. In his most recent fight, he defended his undisputed status against Jaime Munguia, scoring a knockdown. Before that, he beat Edgar Berlanga in September, also putting him on the canvas once.
The Mexican star recently lost his IBF belt after failing to face mandatory challenger William Scull. Canelo doesn't seem too worried about it, though.
So, who's next for boxing's biggest star? Reynoso made it clear it won't be Chris Eubank Jr. He told Dan Rafael:
"It's totally false. Eubank had his chance to fight Canelo in September and the only thing he did was complicate the negotiations. We will not touch base with him again for a future fight! Whatever I tell you is always true! I don't like making statements but what I declare is true."
This statement comes after Eubank's promoter, Ben Shalom, claimed talks had restarted for a potential Canelo fight. Shalom even suggested Wembley Stadium as a venue, saying:
"For me the two fights for me are Canelo and Conor Benn. We've already started small conversations around the Canelo fight. Obviously that [Canelo fight] was close last time. I believe that's a fight that interests Canelo. You can imagine the press conference in the UK and the US, it would be absolutely huge."
Dmitry Bivol is also out of the picture after his recent loss to Artur Beterbiev. He'll likely go straight into a rematch. David Benavidez seems unlikely too, having moved up to light-heavyweight and scheduled to fight David Morrell in January.
One exciting possibility is Terence Crawford. The four-weight champion would need to gain 14 pounds, but this mega-fight is becoming more realistic.
Canelo's next move will become clear soon. He might face a super-middleweight contender in a smaller event or go for the huge Crawford fight. Either way, fans are eager to see who's next for boxing's biggest draw.
