Muhammad Ali Names Surprising Fighter Who'd Beat Him In His Prime: "He's Too Much"
Muhammad Ali, the most celebrated boxer of all time, once admitted Mike Tyson would have beaten him if they had fought in their prime. This surprising revelation came during a joint TV appearance, where Ali recognized Tyson's power and speed.
Ali's career was nothing short of legendary, with 56 wins and only 5 defeats. His losses came against some of boxing's greatest names. Joe Frazier bested him on points after 15 rounds in the 'Fight of the Century' in 1971. Ken Norton handed Ali a split decision loss in 1973, though Ali won their next two matchups. In 1978, Leon Spinks scored a split decision win, but Ali reclaimed the title in their rematch, becoming the first three-time heavyweight champion. Larry Holmes stopped Ali via technical knockout in the 10th round in 1980. Ali's final fight in 1981 ended in a points loss to Trevor Berbick.
Despite his incredible record, Ali showed humility when sitting next to Tyson on TV. In a video clip of their appearance, Ali gives Tyson a knowing look and points at him when asked who would win if they fought in their prime.
"I'm scared of him. He's a real champ," Ali admitted. He went on to say, "[He would have won], I was a dancing master. You are that powerful and so fast, if he hit me [mimes falling over]."
Ali's words carry extra weight given Tyson's achievements. In 1986, at just 20 years old, Tyson became the youngest-ever heavyweight champion. His fearsome punching power earned him respect from even the greatest of all time.
Tyson's career isn't over yet. He's set to face Jake Paul in November in Arlington, Texas. The fight will be broadcast live on Netflix, with Tyson stepping into the ring at 58 years old.
