Gervonta Davis Defends His Next Fight Choice: "You Don't Know Boxing"

Gervonta Davis hit back at fans who criticized his next opponent choice. The undefeated lightweight champion will face Lamont Roach Jr on December 14 in Houston, Texas.

Davis, known as 'Tank', holds a perfect 30-0 record with 28 knockouts. He's considered a generational talent and has won world titles in multiple weight classes. His last two fights were impressive victories - a stoppage win over Ryan Garcia in April last year and a 7th round victory against previously unbeaten Frank Martin.

Many fans hoped to see Davis in a unification bout. Talks with Vasily Lomachenko fell through when the Ukrainian decided to take the rest of the year off. A potential fight with Shakur Stevenson didn't happen either after Stevenson pulled out of a title defense due to a hand injury.

Instead, Davis will defend his lightweight belt against Lamont Roach Jr, the super-featherweight champion with a 26-1-0 record. Roach Jr won the WBA title with a split decision over Hector Luis Garcia last November. He previously challenged for the WBO super featherweight title in 2019, losing to Jamel Herring.

Some fans saw Roach Jr as an unexpected pick, with other contenders available at 135 lbs. Davis didn't take the criticism well. He responded on X (formerly Twitter):

"With that being said, now shut the f*** up. Get back to what you were doing."

Davis also shared social media posts justifying the matchmaking, including one to show that Roach Jr won't find the additional weight an issue.

The fight will take place on December 14 in Houston, Texas, and will be broadcast on PBC on Prime Video PPV. Davis fans will hope to see their fighter back in action after what they feel has been a frustratingly inactive period.
