Terence Crawford grabbed the WBA World Title at 154 lbs with a unanimous decision win over Israil Madrimov. The victory marks Crawford's debut in the super-welterweight division after his success in three lower weight classes.
Crawford, 36, from Omaha, Nebraska, added another championship to his collection. He's now a two-time undisputed champion and holds world titles in four different weight divisions.
Teofimo Lopez, the 27-year-old WBO Super-Lightweight Champion from Brooklyn, wasn't blown away by Crawford's performance. In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Lopez shared his thoughts on the fight:
"I was surprised to see Crawford decline so quick. I thought he had a couple more years before age caught up to him."
Despite his critique, Lopez called out Crawford for a potential fight. He believes it's a match-up boxing fans need to see:
"Why not, man? He's done it, two-time undisputed, I've done it, two-time undisputed. This would be a reincarnation of the main thing, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran. Come on, somebody hype it up for us. We need it. Boxing needs it. The best fighting the best."
Lopez didn't hold back in comparing himself to Crawford. He claimed he's better in every aspect of the game:
"From what I notice today, [I am better at] everything. Every single that I do. From the catch and shoot, the speed, the velocity of punches, the amount of combinations and head movement, the changed in footwork, defence, and the power. Everything."
Crawford will likely stay at super-welterweight and try to unify the belts. Lopez said he's willing to move up in weight for the fight. However, a bout between the two seems unlikely at this point.
Crawford's backer, Turki Alalshikh, recently announced he won't pursue a fight with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez anymore. With that potential matchup off the table, Crawford has plenty of options for his next fight in the 154-pound division.
