De la Hoya: "There's no need to criticize Wilder"

Former world champion and now renowned promoter Oscar De La Hoya has reacted to talk that former heavyweight leader Deontay Wilder should end his career after his knockout loss to Zhang Zhilei.

"Yes, Deontay was knocked out, but there's no need to criticize him. You don't need to say he should end his career now and all that. There's no need to berate him. Deontay Wilder will make his own decision as to whether to quit or not. Fans and pundits should respect the man and honor his decision.

My opinion is, never tell an athlete when he should retire. It's a personal decision for everyone. It's a decision that only the fighter should make. So Deontay, keep up the good work. Whatever you do, whatever you decide, take your time. Take a break, spend some time with your beautiful family. And then you'll make the right decision. It will be a very personal decision. That's life, so take your time, brother," de la Hoya wrote in X.
