UFC head Dana White announced that the former bantamweight champion Julianne Peña received a broken rib and will not be able to enter the third fight with the current title holder Amanda Nunez as part of the UFC 289 tournament scheduled for June 10 in Vancouver, Canada.
This fight was supposed to be the third meeting between Nunes and Peña. In December 2021, the American sensationally won with a choke hold, and eight months later, the Brazilian confidently took revenge, winning by a crushing decision of the judges.
Peña will be replaced by 32-year-old Irene Aldana (14-6) from Mexico, who will return to the octagon after TKO wins over Yana Kunitskaya and Maisie Chiasson.
Recall that before the defeat of Peña, 34-year-old Nunes (22-5) had five successful title defenses in the bantamweight division. "Lioness" also owns a belt in the featherweight division.
