IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin only a few weeks left before the unification fight with the WBA champion Ryota Murata, which will be held on April 9 in Japan. If Golovkin wins, he will be a potential candidate for his third fight against the Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, which may take place in September.

The first fight between Golovkin and Canelo in September 2017 ended in a controversial draw. A year later, Canelo also won by a controversially close majority decision.

Canelo is currently the undisputed super middleweight champion. On May 7 in Las Vegas, he will move up to light heavyweight to fight WBA champion Dmitry Bivol. The fight with Golovkin can take place in the weight category up to 76 kg.

Despite Canelo's recent statements, Golovkin maintains that he has no animosity towards the Mexican star.

“Firstly, there is no hostility on my part, I don’t take it personally. But commenting on his statements, he says that it is personal. Where was he after our second fight? Why did he accumulate this anger for so long? It's unprofessional, too low, when a fighter describes his approach to a fight like that, ”Golovkin said in an interview with The Sun.

Golovkin hasn't competed since December 2020, but is open to discussing the trilogy with Canelo after the fight with Murata is over.

“It is still premature to discuss this, there are too many ifs. If one fighter beats another fighter and so on. Let's wait until May, wait until our fights are over, then we can discuss and better understand what's going on," Golovkin added.

“Of course, I'm always happy to be back in the ring, and it's great that boxing is coming back. The whole atmosphere, the whole tradition of boxing is still alive. I am also glad that I have enough strength to continue to show my fans quality boxing. So you will continue to see me in the ring," Golovkin summed up.
