Abel Sanchez: "Golovkin needs to become himself"

Abel Sanchez, coach with whom Gennady Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) has achieved the most wins, suggests that his former charge is hurting himself with a new style and should return to more aggressive boxing.

“I am not saying that Gennady is in bad shape now. He may be physically well prepared, but he's wasting his time trying to become a boxer instead of using his true strength. Jonathan Banks is a good coach, but if Gennady starts boxing Canelo, he will really play into his hands. If GGG fights like he did with Derevyanchenko, Canelo could really hurt him. He must be himself, and not focus on technique and boxing, ”says the former coach of the two-time world middleweight champion.

Golovkin met twice Saul Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs). At first, their fight was judged as a draw by the judges, and then the sides counted him a loss, although many boxing analysts saw two wins for a boxer from Kazakhstan. In his next fight, on April 9 in Saitama, Japan, Golovkin will face Ryota Murata (16-2, 13 KOs) in the fight for the IBF and WBA belts.

“Murata was in our camp in 2014 when he was just starting his professional career. He spent two days of sparring with us. I won’t say that these were easy sparrings, but Gennady did not give his best and spared him a little, trying to help him more in these trainings. Golovkin is no longer the same boxer as he used to be, although he should pass Murat without any problems. However, this will no longer be an easy walk. It all depends on how he fights. If he tries to box again, as with Derevyanchenko, Sheremeta or Rolls, he will not break Murata. But if he does what he does best, then he can easily handle it, ”said Sanchez.
