Matchroom Boxing head Eddie Hearn proposed to the former WBC heavyweight champion late last year Deontay Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs) fight Dereck Chisora (32-12, 23 KOs). Coach Dave Caldwell first ridiculed the promoter's idea, but today he bluntly stated that if this fight takes place, Chisora will have to look for a new coach.
“I wouldn't coach Derek before the Wilder fight. I don't want to see this fight. It would be too difficult a meeting for Derek. But Derek is Derek and he will do what he wants. He's always been that way,” Caldwell said.
“Derek listens to people's advice when it comes to picking opponents, but ultimately he chooses whom to fight with. If he wants this fight, it will happen. If it had been my decision, he would not have fought Wilder,” added the British coach.
Deontay Wilder has lost the last two fights - in February 2020, Tyson Fury defeated him in a rematch by TKO, and in October 2021, The King of the Gypsies completed the trilogy with Wilder by a knockout in the eleventh round.
On the other hand, Derek Chisora in October 2020 unanimously lost on points to Alexander Usyk, in May 2021 he lost by a split decision to Joseph Parker, and on December 18 he lost to the New Zealander unanimously on points in a rematch.
