There is a strong possibility that Rolando Romero (14-0, 12 KOs) will not be able to step into the ring in his scheduled Dec. 5 bout against Gervonta Davis (25-0, 14 KOs). It was reported on social media Thursday that the 26-year-old boxer has been accused of sexual assault. No word yet on when the alleged incident took place, but the victim allegedly reported it to police.
This evening of boxing will be shown in the U.S. on pay-per-view on Showtime TV, which has not yet commented on the matter in any way. Journalist Mike Coppinger reported that Isaac Cruz (22-1-1, 15 KOs) is currently the most serious candidate to replace Romero in the fight against Davis.
The 23-year-old Mexican defeated former world champion Francisco Vargas in his last appearance in the ring. The WBA lightweight championship belt will be on the line in his bout with Davis.
Davis beat Mario Barrios early in his last fight to win the WBA super featherweight belt. The 26-year-old already held titles in three weight classes.
