In the fourth round of the fight, the 18-year-old Mexican missed a hard punch and received a standing knockdown from the referee, but seconds later she started convulsing and lost consciousness. The girl was immediately taken to the hospital and doctors put her in a pharmacological coma. Unfortunately, the treatment proved ineffective, and Zapata died five days after the ill-fated bout.

Jeanette Zacarias Zapata had six fights in the professional ring. The Mexican had a knockout in the fight immediately preceding her performance in Montreal, but as her managers assured her, she flew to Canada with a full medical check-up package.
