Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) has lost his interim WBC lightweight title. The American won the belt in January, defeating Luke Campbell by TKO. Garcia was scheduled to face Javier Fortuna (36-2-1, 25 KOs) in July, but withdrew from the fight, citing psychological problems.
The 22-year-old boxer in the fight against Fortuna will now be replaced by former super featherweight champion Joseph Diaz Jr. (31-1-1, 15 KOs). It is not yet known how long Garcia will be out of boxing.
The winner of Diaz vs Fortuna bout, who will battle for the interim WBC champion belt, will become a mandatory for Devin Haney, who is the World Boxing Council lightweight champion. On Saturday, the American will meet Jorge Linares.
