Dillian Whyte (27-1, 18 KOs) vs. Alexander Povetkin (35-2-1, 24 KOs) for an interim WBC heavyweight belt will take place on Saturday at Brentwood. In case of victory, the Briton will retain his status as an official contender for a full-fledged WBC world title, for which he had to fight no later than February 2021. But it is already known that this date will be postponed.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman announced that the fight in February of Whyte and the winner of the third fight Fury - Wilder will be impossible to organize due to too short time intervals. The American-British trilogy is scheduled for December 19, but it is possible that this will not happen until next year.
The head of the World Boxing Council has so far announced that he will set a new date for Whyte's possible fight for the world heavyweight title, but did not provide details. WBC decisions will also depend on the development of the coronavirus pandemic.
It is also possible a scenario in which Fury will receive the status of the WBC Franchise champion. This frees him from the mandatory defense, and Whyte will battle for the title with another opponent.
