Virgil Ortiz (16-0, 16 KOs) defeated Samuel Vargas (31-6-2, 14 KOs) by TKO in the seventh round in the main event of the evening of the Golden Boy Promotions tournament in Indio, California. At the time of the stoppage the 22-year-old boxer was confidently leading on points.
Vargas was unable to oppose anything to the opponent, much superior to him in speed. Ortiz regularly delivered powerful shots to the target, especially right hands. Vargas wanted to survive the first attacks in order to regain his own in the later rounds, but the American did not slow down. In the end, Vargas found himself on the floor, and then the referee stopped the fight on the last seconds of the seventh round, when Vargas stagnated with his back against the ropes under a barrage of punches from Ortiz.
Thus, Ortiz continued his impressive streak of stoppage victories. The Texas boxer also defended his gold WBA welterweight belt.
As part of the same evening, Seniesa Estrada (19-0, 8 KOs) scored a lightning victory over the previously undefeated Miranda Adkins (5-1, 5 KOs). The owner of the WBC light flyweight silver belt knocked out her rival in just 7 seconds. It was the fastest knockout in women's boxing history.
It is worth noting that, despite a generally good record at the time of this fight, 42-year-old Adkins has 5-0, 5 KOs and even some kind of belt of the Women's International Boxing Association (WIBA), in the professional ring before that she spent only 8 rounds and none of her rivals had a single victory in their records.
