De La Hoya: Only Canelo wants to fight the best

Oscar de la Hoya, a former world champion in several weight categories and currently a promoter among others of one of the best P4P boxers in the world Saul Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs), argues that Canelo is by far the best fighter in the world for two reasons.

“Canelo just needs to be put first. You just look with whom he is fighting, and know with whom he wants to fight. I have a strong belief that Canelo is the only boxer who wants to fight the best. Anyone else asks: how much will we earn on this? Canelo asks nothing, just says: “I want to fight the best,” De la Hoya said.

“Terence Crawford and Vasyl Lomachenko are equal. I think Crawford could be a superstar, his skills allow that. Lomachenko is also an excellent boxer, and I think that if he wants, he can perform in the welterweights and look good there,” the head of the Golden Boy Promotions added.

In his last fight in November last year Alvarez knocked Sergey Kovalev out and won the WBO light heavyweight world title. In May 2020, Canelo was supposed to fight WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, but the coronavirus pandemic prevented this bout. Currently, the number of candidates for a meeting with Alvarez is huge, at least according to media reports. Already there were talks on such opponents as Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Caleb Plant, Ryota Murata, David Benavides and Anthony Dirrell.
