As was reported yesterday, the UFC leadership planned to have a light heavyweight title fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Yoel Romero on November 3 at UFC 230. The Cuban responded to this information by telling him that he would not have time to prepare for the date. Now promotion matchmakers are working on organizing the Gustafsson and John Jones duel by the end of the year.
“The UFC needs a main event for the tournament on November 3rd. Gustafsson was offered to fight for the vacant title in the light heavyweight division against Romero, and on December 29 they planned to arrange a third fight for Jones and Cormier in the heavyweights. However, both Cormier and Jones decisively stated that they intend to meet each other in the light heavyweight division.
Thus, it is illogical to arrange a fight for an interim title on November 3, and on December 29 - a fight for a full title. Moreover, this date did not fit for Cormier. Now they are planning to arrange a rematch Jones - Gustafsson on December 29, apparently with a championship belt at stake. And yes, the UFC 230 tournament still doesn’t have a main event,” Helvani wrote on Twitter.
