Topuria Blasts Josh Hokit After Alex Pereira Presser Incident: ‘That Kind of Thing Boils My Blood’

Ilia Topuria has spoken out against Josh Hokit after the American drew backlash for offensive remarks aimed at Alex Pereira’s mother during a recent press conference. The UFC lightweight champion addressed the incident in an interview with ABC, making it clear he believed the line had been crossed.

The exchange quickly gained attention across MMA circles, especially because fight promotion has increasingly leaned into personal insults in recent years. Even in a sport that thrives on trash talk, family members are still widely viewed by many fighters and fans as off-limits.

According to Topuria, Hokit’s comments stood out for all the wrong reasons.

“I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been to a lot of press conferences and seen all kinds of things. But I had never seen someone get up and start talking about another man’s mother with that much disrespect.

“It was really ugly. It was very loud in there and it was hard to hear much. Alex was sitting right in the middle and may not have heard everything Hokit was saying. He was saying bizarre things for no reason. Hokit is never going to fight Pereira, so why insult him? What’s the point? You can insult your opponent personally, that’s normal in our business. But bringing someone’s mother into it ... that kind of thing boils my blood. You can’t just let that slide,” Topuria said.

For American fans, the reaction is unlikely to be split. Verbal jabs sell fights, but attacks involving family usually draw a different kind of heat, especially when there is no actual matchup to promote. That is part of why Topuria’s defense of Pereira has resonated beyond the moment itself.

Now the focus shifts to whether Hokit responds and whether Pereira addresses the controversy himself. In a sport built on confrontation, this is the kind of episode that can linger long after the microphones are turned off.
