Paulo Costa vs. Azamat Murzakanov at UFC 327: How a Light Heavyweight Debut Turned Into a Statement Win

Paulo Costa made a splashy light heavyweight debut at UFC 327, stopping previously unbeaten Russian contender Azamat Murzakanov by third-round TKO. The finish came off a crushing high kick that capped a game plan Costa says was built with precision.

Under the lights at UFC 327, Paulo Costa delivered one of the more surprising results of the night by stopping Azamat Murzakanov in the third round of their light heavyweight matchup. The Brazilian earned the technical knockout with a high kick and follow-up offense, handing Murzakanov the first loss of his career and immediately making himself relevant in a new division.

That matters because 205 pounds has been hungry for fresh names, and Costa’s move up could give the division a proven draw with real finishing power. For Murzakanov, the fight was a chance to break out from dark-horse status into the serious contender tier. Instead, he ran into a veteran who looked prepared for every phase of the matchup.

Afterward, Costa said the result was no accident. “My coaches planned everything down to the smallest details. We knew absolutely everything: what Murzakanov would do, every movement. Nothing surprised me. But he was surprised. He didn’t expect what I was doing in the cage,” Costa said.

Costa also described a brutal three-month camp centered on repetition and discipline. According to him, his team drilled the same core reactions every day: shutting down the jab, managing range, and recognizing the right and wrong positions before exchanges could develop.

“There was no room for mistakes. We kept practicing the same thing over and over until it became muscle memory,” he said.

From an American MMA perspective, this is exactly the kind of performance that reintroduces Costa as more than a big personality. He has always had name value, but at light heavyweight he now has a new path to meaningful fights. If he strings together another win, the UFC could match him with a ranked opponent quickly. Murzakanov, meanwhile, still looks dangerous, but this loss raises real questions about how his style holds up against larger, more experienced pressure fighters with kicking variety.

The next move is the interesting one: whether the UFC fast-tracks Costa into the top of the division or uses this win as the start of a longer run at 205.
