Askren: "Usman is not worthy of fighting for the title"

Retired American mixed martial artist Ben Askren believes that former UFC welterweight champion Nigerian Kamaru Usman doesn’t deserve to be the next opponent of the current titleholder in this division, Islam Makhachev.

"Makhachev will be the favorite in any title bout. Kamaru Usman? I had my issues with him, so I don't want to sound biased. But I really believe that he is not worthy of fighting for the belt. He truly was a champion, but lately things haven't been going well for him.

The welterweight belt has changed hands several times after Kamaru's loss to Leon Edwards. All this time, Kamaru was on the sidelines. I think the young guys in this division have shown themselves better," Askren said in an interview with Helen Yee Sports.

Let us remind you that earlier Makhachev stated that he plans to return to the octagon in the summer.
