Legendary Canadian former UFC champion in two weight classes Georges St-Pierre shared his opinion on the current welterweight division titleholder Islam Makhachev and explained what skills a fighter should possess to secure a victory over the Dagestani.
“I think Islam Makhachev is currently the best fighter on the planet regardless of weight categories. I believe that if Islam fought Adriano Martins again, he would win 9 out of 10 times. But that night, Makhachev got hit, and he suffered his only defeat.
To beat Makhachev, you need a guy who can compete with him in wrestling and also hold his own in striking. There is a guy who gave Islam trouble. He was my training partner, and his name is Mansour Barnaoui. It was the beginning of Makhachev's career. If you watch that fight, it could have gone very differently. Mansour fought Islam exactly the way he needs to be fought,” St-Pierre stated in an interview with The Break Talk.
Let us remind you, that in 2013 Mansour Barnaoui lost to Makhachev by unanimous decision of the judges.
