Oscar De La Hoya was a great fighter, and now he is trying to reach that same status as a promoter. Recently, the Golden Boy extended his partnership with DAZN and spoke a bit about his work as a fight organizer.
"When fighters reach the top, they suddenly forget everything and everyone who helped them along the way. Then the only thing that matters to them is money; there is no loyalty. I’ve been through that many times. When I moved to a new level and started my own promotional company, the best promoter in history, Bob Arum, gave me the best advice. He told me: ‘Oscar, never fall in love with your fighters, because in the end every one of them will break your heart.’ And that happened to me. But I got over it a long time ago, and I don’t suffer the way I used to. I drew a line. Life showed me how ungrateful fighters are and how short their memory is," said the head of Golden Boy Promotions.
"I regret only one thing — selling The Ring magazine. I treated its reputation with great care. When Turki Alalshikh came along, I was sure I was selling it to someone who truly cared about the sport and would protect its integrity, but as it turned out, I was wrong. All of these The Ring ratings are outdated and no longer matter. There is no integrity left in them. The Ring was the most important magazine for more than a hundred years, but now it can practically be thrown in the trash. I’m not someone who dwells on the past, but I do regret one thing. I should not have sold The Ring to these people," De La Hoya added.
