Moses Itauma Calls Out Oleksandr Usyk, Says Heavyweight Champion Is Avoiding the Risk

Fast-rising British heavyweight Moses Itauma has taken aim at unified world champion Oleksandr Usyk, openly questioning the champion’s refusal to entertain a fight with him. The 21-year-old contender made his stance clear in comments to Inside The Ring, framing Usyk’s position as a calculated move from a veteran titleholder protecting his spot at the top.

That callout matters because the heavyweight division is already searching for its next marquee challenger, and Itauma is trying to force his way into that conversation earlier than expected. In a division that can stall behind politics and mandatory obligations, even public pressure can shift the landscape.

Itauma said he wants the fight now and argued that Usyk is using the freedom that comes with champion status to steer clear of unnecessary danger. He suggested Usyk has earned the right to make those decisions, but also made clear he does not buy the idea that he is simply too inexperienced to belong in the ring with the Ukrainian star.

He pointed to the criticism surrounding his previous bout with Dillian Whyte, saying people raised similar doubts before that matchup as well. Itauma also argued that Usyk is unlikely to openly admit he does not want to risk his career against a 21-year-old prospect climbing the rankings, adding that fans can believe the public explanation if they want.

From an American boxing perspective, this is the kind of callout that gets attention because it taps into a familiar debate: when does a blue-chip heavyweight prospect stop being “one for the future” and become a real threat to the belt holders? That is the tension here. Usyk has little to gain commercially from facing an unproven young contender, while Itauma has everything to gain by attaching himself to the biggest name in the division.

Usyk has previously made it clear he is not interested in facing the young Brit, saying he does not want to “break” a promising fighter. Whether that is caution, honesty, or smart championship business depends on who you ask. Either way, Itauma has now made his position public, and the next move will show whether this is just noise or the beginning of a real heavyweight push.
