39-year-old Oleksandr Usyk challenged the main "opponent" that no boxer has ever defeated yet — age.
In a fresh interview with The Ring magazine, the Ukrainian champion, who holds the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles in the heavyweight division, spoke candidly about the pressure exerted on him:
"I'm constantly told: stop, don't go to the ring anymore. You are already too old. Nature and age — the toughest opponents — cannot be defeated," he said.
But Usyk sees it differently. For him, being 39 is not a sentence, but an additional motivation: "My challenge is to prove to everyone that they are wrong. Age can be defeated," declared the undisputed champion.
It is still unclear who will be Alexander's first opponent this year. Negotiations for the long-awaited fight with Deontay Wilder have reached an impasse, and the fight is currently not on the schedule. There are many rumors surrounding the name of the next opponent — from mandatory defenses (in particular, Agit Kabayel is mentioned according to WBC) to exotic options and even a possible third fight with Tyson Fury.
