Anthony Joshua, former heavyweight boxing champion, recently spoke out amid swirling retirement rumors. The speculations followed tragic news involving his close friends. After a car accident in Nigeria claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, Joshua took time to reflect on their impact and what comes next for him.
Two weeks after the tragedy, Joshua addressed his fans and released heartfelt statements via YouTube. He frankly shared how he deals with the grief and how it led him to reconsider his motivations as a fighter.
"What can I say? One day, my time will come and I'm not scared, either, at all. It's actually comforting knowing I've got two brothers on the other side."
Joshua's comments hinted he does not focus on legacy alone but rather finds importance in doing right by those who were close to him.
"So my goal is to continue to help them achieve their goals, even though they may not be in the physical [world]. I'm going to help them fulfill their dreams for their families."
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, weighed in with observations during an interview with Ariel Helwani. Hearn expressed belief that boxing holds an essential place in Joshua's life.
"It almost feels like, being with him recently, boxing saved him. And it will probably save him again."
Having fully recovered physically from previous endeavors, Joshaua appears committed more than ever. His intent goes beyond simply getting back in the ring—he seeks to support his late friends' families actively.
“How does this affect your legacy? Legacy. Legacy. It ain't about legacy. It's just doing what's right.”
While uncertainties linger about Joshua’s next career move, he manifests unwavering support toward those left behind and demonstrates resilience through deep personal loss.
