Shields, known for her impressive 17-0 record with 3 KOs, was hanging out with some big names in boxing when things took a strange turn. A man came up to her and called her Serena Williams, which didn't sit well with the champ.
"At first, I was like, huh? The way he said it, I knew he knew I wasn't Serena. Like, you know damn well my name is not Serena. And when have you ever seen Serena with orange hair?"
The situation got weirder when the man seemed to be recording Shields with what looked like camera glasses. Papoose, Shields' partner, stepped in to defuse the situation.
"Pap told him to move or just to chill out," Shields explained. "And the dude started getting smart with Pap. It was weird. It was like bro, if you don't gone somewhere..."
Shields didn't appreciate the attempt to catch her on camera without permission.
"Where you all get off with them glasses, you'll be having on? Glasses that be recording people. Where you all get off with that? Is that even legal? I think he was just trying to go viral, but if he did, it was going to be in a bad way."
She praised Papoose for his protective response, hinting at how things might have escalated.
"Pap definitely do not play around. I know Pap got the hand. So you all can just put two and two together about what happened, but he don't take no disrespect. I don't take no disrespect. But I block people like that."
The incident comes on the heels of Shields' recent victory on July 26, where she beat Lani Daniels in front of more than 15,000 fans at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The unanimous decision win (100-90, 99-91, 99-91) saw her retain all her titles.
Shields' next move in the ring isn't clear yet. She hasn't scheduled her next fight, and it's not certain if she'll compete again before the end of 2025. Her last post-July appearance before 2023 was back in December 2018 against Femke Hermans.
As for the incident at the Crawford-Alvarez fight, Shields seems more focused on discouraging attention-seekers than dwelling on personal conflicts. Her partner Papoose's quick response highlights the supportive dynamic they share, both in and out of the boxing world.
