Terence Crawford's power could surprise Canelo Alvarez when they meet in the ring. That's according to former two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter, who faced Crawford in November 2021.
Crawford and Canelo will fight for the undisputed super-middleweight world championship on Saturday September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The bout will see Crawford jump up in weight to challenge Canelo, who's established himself as the dominant force at 168lbs.
At 37 years old, Crawford remains unbeaten and holds all the belts at welterweight. A win over Canelo would make him the first male fighter to win all four belts in three weight divisions.
Porter, who put up a good fight before Crawford stopped him in the 10th round, shared his thoughts on Crawford's punching power in an interview with K.O. Artist Sports.
"Even if he connects and you're not out, he's going to keep coming and he's going to hit you. I kind of describe Terence's power as more of a whip because he throws his power with speed. It coins the phrase, 'Speed makes power.' So his power is kind of disguised because of his speed, which I think makes it more of a whip. It's not going to take a long time to get there, it's going to get there fast and it's going to pop you."
Porter's description paints Crawford's power as fast, persistent, and deceptive. The Omaha native has stopped 31 opponents so far in his career, proving his ability to end fights early.
The big question will be whether Crawford can carry that power up to super-middleweight. Canelo has one of the best chins in boxing and will put that to the test against Crawford's speed-powered punches.
