Vergil Ortiz Jr wants to fight the best boxers in the world. The undefeated Texan, who holds a 23-0 record with 21 knockouts, has set his sights on three big names: Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jr, and Jaron Ennis.
Ortiz Jr, the current WBC interim super-lightweight champion, didn't mince words when talking about a potential showdown with Crawford. The 27-year-old said:
"I don't know how we would do it but if it does happen, that would be amazing. We have been calling for that fight since [they both were at welterweight] and it has been a few years now."
Crawford, however, has his hands full at the moment. He's gearing up for a highly-anticipated clash with Canelo Alvarez on September 13 in Las Vegas. The fight will take place at super-middleweight and has fans buzzing about the matchup between two pound-for-pound greats.
Ortiz Jr also expressed interest in facing Errol Spence Jr, the former unified welterweight champion. Spence, now 35, hasn't fought since his defeat to Crawford two years ago. Ortiz Jr shared his thoughts on a potential fight with Spence:
"It would mean a lot to me because I grew up with Spence. It would just be a cool full circle moment. I just can't explain it because I was there. It's just that feeling. It would mean a lot to me."
The third name on Ortiz Jr's list is Jaron 'Boots' Ennis, the former WBA and IBF welterweight champion. Ennis is planning to move up to 154lbs, with his super welterweight debut expected in October.
Talks of an Ortiz Jr vs Ennis fight have been brewing. The fighters' teams reportedly discussed the matchup last month, with a potential date in the first quarter of 2026.
Ortiz Jr's willingness to take on these top-tier opponents shows his drive to challenge himself against the best in boxing. As he continues to climb the ranks, fans will be watching closely to see which of these exciting matchups might come to fruition.
