Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez are getting ready for a big fight. The two champions will face off on Saturday, September 13, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. They'll battle it out in the super-middleweight division at 168 pounds.
Crawford, who's 37 and from Omaha, Nebraska, has never lost a fight. He's moving up in weight to challenge Canelo, the undisputed super-middleweight champion from Mexico. It's a huge step for Crawford, who used to fight at welterweight.
Crawford took a quick trip to super-welterweight last August, beating former WBA champion Israil Madrimov. Now, he's jumping up even higher to face Canelo.
In a recent chat with The Ring Magazine, Crawford surprised everyone by naming three fighters he thinks are better than Canelo:
"[Oscar De La Hoya] better than Canelo … [Dmitry Bivol] better than Canelo … [Floyd Mayweather Jr] better than Canelo."
Crawford's words are bold, considering Canelo's impressive career. But they're not without reason. Canelo has only lost twice in his career, and both losses were to fighters Crawford mentioned.
Back in 2013, Floyd Mayweather Jr beat Canelo in Las Vegas and took his WBC light-middleweight title. More recently, in May 2022, Dmitry Bivol handed Canelo a unanimous decision loss when the Mexican tried to become WBA light-heavyweight champion.
The fight on September 13 will be huge. Crawford's moving up two weight classes to challenge one of boxing's biggest stars. With his recent comments, he's made it clear he's not intimidated by Canelo's reputation. It's shaping up to be an exciting night in Las Vegas.
