Dwight Muhammad Qawi, the former two-division world champion known as "The Camden Buzzsaw," has died at 72 after a long battle with dementia. Qawi fought the condition for over a decade, facing it with the same grit and resilience that defined his boxing career.

Born Dwight Braxton in Baltimore and raised in Camden, New Jersey, Qawi's life took a dramatic turn when he landed in Rahway State Prison for armed robbery. He spent nearly a decade behind bars, but it's there that he discovered boxing.

After his release in 1978, Qawi started his professional boxing career. He quickly earned the nickname "The Camden Buzzsaw" for his violent, cold-minded style that drew comparisons to Joe Frazier. In 1981, Qawi defeated Matthew Saad Muhammad to claim the WBC light heavyweight title.

Qawi moved up to cruiserweight in 1985, capturing the WBA title in that division. The following year, he faced Evander Holyfield in what many consider one of the greatest cruiserweight battles in boxing history. Qawi lost a split decision after 15 tough rounds.

In 1988, Qawi stepped up to heavyweight and took on George Foreman. He retired in 1999 with a record of 41 wins, 11 losses, 1 draw, and 25 knockouts. The International Boxing Hall of Fame inducted him in 2004, cementing his legacy in the sport.

Qawi's sister, Wanda King, told Ring Magazine:

"He was full of love. He never gave up, not even at the end."

Qawi's journey from prison inmate to Hall of Fame champion inspired countless young fighters. After retiring, he became a trainer and mentor in his community, continuing to make a positive impact.

His life story shows the power of transformation and perseverance. Qawi proved that with toughness and determination, anyone can turn their life around and achieve their dreams.

In his final years, Qawi stayed out of the public eye and media as he battled dementia. He faced this challenge with the same fighting spirit that made him a champion in the ring.
