Manny Pacquiao's return to the ring has caught the attention of current WBA Regular welterweight champion Rolando Romero. The eight-division world champion fought to a majority draw against Mario Barrios this past weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao, now 46 years old, nearly became the oldest world welterweight champion in history. The Filipino legend previously set this record in 2019. The fight ended with two judges scoring it 114-114, while one favored Barrios. Some boxing experts felt Pacquiao had done enough to win.
'Rolly' Romero, fresh off a points decision victory over Ryan Garcia on May 2 in Times Square, New York City, has expressed interest in facing Pacquiao next. Romero floored Garcia in the second round of what was his first appearance at 147lbs, having previously competed at lightweight and super-lightweight.
"A Hall of Famer on my resume, who wouldn't want that? That's the easiest way to get into the Hall of Fame, right. We can do it. Everything has to make sense. It's going to be a fan favourite. That makes sense right there."
Romero's interest comes at a time when the WBA title picture is set to change. Current super champion Jaron Ennis is expected to vacate and move up in weight, which would make Romero the sole WBA champion at welterweight.
Pacquiao's recent performance against Barrios has opened doors for potential big-name fights. Sean Gibbons, Pacquiao's advisor, has indicated they're open to discussing a bout with Romero.
The Filipino icon's return has certainly shaken up the welterweight division. With Romero throwing his hat in the ring, fans might see an intriguing clash between the seasoned veteran and the rising champion in the near future.
