Marvin Hagler has named Roberto Duran as the best opponent he faced among the Four Kings. The former undisputed middleweight champion shared his thoughts in a 'Best I Faced' feature with Ring Magazine, praising Duran's skills and experience.

Hagler's fights with Duran, Tommy Hearns, and Sugar Ray Leonard were all significant moments in boxing history. Each bout had its own unique flavor and impact on the sport.

On November 10, 1983, Hagler defended his title against Duran in a tactical 15-round contest. Duran boxed smartly and became the first man to go the distance with Hagler as champion. Despite losing by unanimous decision, Duran's performance left a lasting impression on Hagler.

"I would still say Roberto Duran [had the best skills]. I loved that fight the most because between the both of us it brought out our skill," Hagler said. "I would say Roberto Duran was [the best overall], very experienced."

Just under two years later, Hagler faced Tommy Hearns in a fight nicknamed "The War." The bout was explosive from the opening bell, with the first round considered by many as the greatest in boxing history. Hagler won by third-round stoppage in what became an all-time classic affair.

Hagler's final bout came against Sugar Ray Leonard on April 6, 1987. Leonard, returning after nearly three years away from the ring, used his speed, movement, and well-timed activity to secure a controversial split decision victory after 12 rounds. The result remains hotly debated to this day.

Duran's position as Hagler's top pick might surprise some, given that he was naturally smaller than his rivals and had a mixed record against the Four Kings. Duran won one and lost five fights against the group, including a win and two losses against Leonard, a knockout loss to Hearns, and the competitive decision loss to Hagler in 1983.

Hagler's respect for Duran's skills and experience shines through in his assessment, highlighting the impact of their 1983 encounter. The fight brought out the best in both men, showcasing the high level of skill that defined the Four Kings era of boxing.
