Shakur Stevenson wants to fight Gervonta Davis while he's still undefeated. The unbeaten boxer shared his thoughts in a recent interview with The Ring, expressing worry about a potential Davis loss.
Stevenson, boasting a perfect 23-0 record, gears up for his next fight against William Zepeda on July 12 in New York. But his sights are set on a bigger prize - a showdown with Davis.
"I know the fight between Tank and me is important, so I'm worried about not getting the chance to fight him while he's still undefeated, with Lamont Roach ahead of him."
Davis faces a tough test in his upcoming rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. on August 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Their first bout in March ended in a controversial draw, leaving Roach feeling robbed and prompting a complaint to the New York Commission.
Stevenson believes Davis can't afford to slack off in the rematch.
"When it comes to a rematch, I don't see it like everyone else. I know what Tank is up against, so he's going to have to be 100 percent at his best and then some. He can't just be at his best; he has to be better than last time."
Roach silenced critics in their first encounter, showing he can hang with the best. Now, he's hungry for revenge and eager to prove the draw wasn't a fluke.
For Davis, the rematch offers a chance at redemption after a disappointing performance in March. He'll need to step up his game to keep his undefeated record intact and keep the dream fight with Stevenson alive.
As Stevenson prepares for his own challenge against Zepeda, he'll keep a close eye on the Davis-Roach rematch. The outcome could shape the future of the lightweight division and determine whether the much-anticipated Stevenson-Davis showdown will come to fruition.
