The trouble started in the sixth round when Navarrete got a cut on his eyebrow. Referee Edward Collantes said it came from a headbutt. This call turned out to be crucial.
By the eighth round, the fight had to be stopped because of the cut. Since the injury was ruled to be from a headbutt, the fight went to the scorecards. Navarrete got the win.
But video replays showed something different. It looks like Suarez's glove, not his head, caused the cut. If that's true, it could change everything.
Jack Reiss, an official who looked at the video, couldn't say for sure what happened. He told BoxingScene:
"Our rules on replays state that unless there is no discussion, the referee's decision will prevail, and this was very debatable. I saw it several times, but nothing up close and nothing from the right angle."
If the cut had been ruled to come from a punch, the fight might have ended differently. The ringside doctor, Robert Ruelaz, could have stopped the fight. That would have given Suarez the win and the title.
Now, the California State Athletic Commission might step in. They could change the result to a no contest. Top Rank, the company that put on the fight, seems to think something will happen. Carl Moretti, their vice president of operations, said simply: "There will be a rematch."
This mess puts a cloud over what should have been a big night for Navarrete, also known as "Vaquero Navarrete" from the State of Mexico. For now, he keeps his title. But for how long? We'll have to wait and see what the commission decides and if there's going to be a rematch.
