The boxing world got a double dose of disappointment last weekend. Fans in New York and Riyadh tuned in for what was billed as "Fatal Fury" but ended up watching fights that were anything but furious.
Bill Haney, father of boxer Devin Haney, jumped to his son's defense on social media platform X. He took aim at critics who called Devin's victory over Jose Ramirez on Friday night boring.
Haney Sr. compared his son's performance to that of Mexican champion Canelo Alvarez, who fought William Scull on Saturday. According to CompuBox stats, Devin landed 70 punches against Ramirez, while Canelo connected with 56 against Scull.
"My son lands 70 punches and gets called boring. Canelo lands 56 and he's strategic and calculated. The playing field is not level," Bill Haney wrote on X.
He didn't stop there. Haney Sr. took shots at boxing commentators Dan Rafael and Tim Bradley for their criticism of the fight.
"Jose Ramirez ended up in the back of an ambulance, while Devin was sitting ringside, laughing and ready for the next challenge," Haney Sr. fired back.
The weekend's boxing action kicked off Friday with Devin Haney beating Jose Ramirez and Rolly Romero defeating Ryan Garcia in New York. Saturday saw Jaime Munguia best Bruno Surace in a rematch, followed by Canelo Alvarez's decision win over William Scull in Riyadh.
Canelo's fight looked more like a footrace than a boxing match. The Mexican champ tried to land punches while his Cuban opponent seemed determined to avoid a knockout at all costs.
Fans and pundits alike expressed their disappointment with the lack of action across all the bouts. The contrast between the event's explosive name and the tepid fights left many wondering if they'd seen fatal fury or just fatal boredom.
