Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez kept his undisputed middleweight championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Mexican boxer won a unanimous decision against William Scull, the previously unbeaten Cuban fighter.
The fight ended around 7 AM local time, leaving many in Riyadh sleepless. Fans didn't get the excitement they hoped for. Scull's defensive and evasive style made for a less-than-thrilling match.
After the fight, Canelo shared his plans with reporters.
"We're going to go out for breakfast, first of all, to celebrate with my friends, with my family and I'm happy. Obviously, we wanted to have a different kind of fight, but it takes two to have a good fight."
Canelo's words seemed to criticize Scull's strategy.
Minutes after Canelo's win, Sheikh Turki Alalshikh, a minister and Arab promoter, made a big announcement. Canelo will face Terence Crawford on September 12 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The fight will be part of Mexico's Independence Day celebrations, with Canelo's middleweight title on the line.
Alvarez continues to hold all four major belts in the middleweight division - the WBA, WBO, WBC, and IBF. His upcoming fight against Crawford promises to be a much more action-packed affair than his recent victory over Scull.
