Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez defends his fighting style against critics who say his bouts lack excitement. The Mexican superstar argues it's not his fault, but his opponents who refuse to engage.
Canelo, one of boxing's biggest names, faces questions about the entertainment value of his recent fights. Some fans and pundits compare him unfavorably to other Mexican legends known for their all-action style.
The 34-year-old champion fires back at these claims. In a chat with The Ring Magazine, he said:
"For a good fight you always need two and they say that I am the one who does not give good fights. They say they are boring, but you need an opponent who also wants to fight and not just go up to survive the 12 rounds."
Canelo points out a pattern he's noticed. His opponents often take a defensive approach, making it hard to create the spectacle fans crave. He added:
"They always blame me, they say Canelo makes boring fights, but it's both of us."
The Mexican star holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles at super middleweight. He's set to return to the ring against undefeated William Scull in Saudi Arabia. A win could see him regain the IBF belt, completing his collection in the division.
Despite his success, Canelo stays motivated by his love for the sport, not money. He explained:
"I could retire today and I wouldn't need anything, but I'm still enjoying it. When you are questioned: 'When will it be enough?', if you think about it in money, it will never be enough, but you need to be honest with yourself and I don't say it for the money, but for loving what you do. If you can do it until you're 45 or 50 and you still enjoy it 100 percent, you keep going, as long as you have the same passion."
Canelo's upcoming fight against Scull gives him a chance to silence his critics and show he's still at the top of his game.
