Canelo Alvarez, Mexico's most successful boxing champion, comes from a big family with an interesting background. His parents, Santos Alvarez and Ana Maria Barragan, raised nine children while running a family business selling fresh water and flavored ice pops.
Canelo grew up with seven brothers and one sister. His older brother Rigoberto, nicknamed "El Español," was more dedicated to boxing at first. He had some professional fights in Guadalajara before Canelo became famous.
Ricardo "Dinamita" Alvarez also stepped into the ring. He boxed for two years, racking up 24 wins with 14 knockouts, 3 losses, and 3 draws. Two other brothers, Daniel "El Conde" and Victor "El Matador" Alvarez, tried boxing but retired quickly after just a few fights.
Gonzalo "El Leon" Alvarez only had one pro fight, which he lost. He later went into politics and became the mayor of Zapotlanejo, Jalisco in 2021. But his time in office hasn't been smooth - he's been accused of misusing public money.
Ramon "El Inocente" Alvarez is still boxing actively. He's got 29 wins, 16 by knockout, 6 losses, and 3 draws. Ramon's had some exciting fights against Omar Chavez, the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez.
The only sister, Ana Elda Alvarez, didn't get into boxing. She's said:
"Living among seven men has been wonderful. I didn't think about boxing."
Ana Elda is very proud of what Canelo has achieved in his career.
All of Canelo's siblings support him fully in his boxing career. They're a close-knit family, proud of each other's successes and sticking together through thick and thin. Canelo's rise to the top of the boxing world is a story of family support and unity as much as it is about his own talent and hard work.
