Chris Eubank Jr missed the weight for his big fight against Conor Benn on Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The match comes nearly three years after it was first planned in October 2022.
At Friday's weigh-in, Benn came in nearly four pounds under the 160lb limit. Eubank Jr, on the other hand, was 5 ounces over, costing him a hefty $500,000 fine.
Tony Bellew, a former WBC cruiserweight champion who never missed weight in his career, shared his thoughts on The Stomping Ground.
"It's been really hard on Chris Eubank Jr, but he signed up for this. He agreed to this, don't agree to fights and weights that aren't possible."
Bellew pointed out that Eubank Jr has made this weight before, but this time he made a small mistake with big consequences.
"They obviously are possible because he's made the weight a few times over the year. But he's miscalculated the weight by the smallest of margins and he's paid the heaviest of prices, literally."
Bellew guessed that Eubank Jr might be carrying extra weight right now.
"He's heavier than 10 pounds right now. I would imagine he's 14 to 16 pounds right now. His body is in shock right now, so I'm not sure he'll lose anything in his sleep. It will refuse to give up any weight that it would usually give up overnight."
The former champion suggested Eubank Jr might try to lose more weight before the fight.
"If he's drunk enough water and had enough salt and electrolytes in his body, then potentially he might give up two or three pounds overnight. But believe you me, he's skipping or he's back on that bike in the morning. I've seen fighters that have done it over the years."
The build-up to this fight has been intense. At the launch press conference, Eubank Jr smashed an egg over Benn's head. Now, with the weight miss, things have gotten even more heated.
There's a rehydration weigh-in set for Saturday, which might be affected by Eubank Jr's weight miss. Billy Joe Saunders has also given a harsh opinion on Eubank Jr's failure to make weight.
