William Scull, the Cuban boxer holding the IBF 168 lbs. title, feels sure he'll beat Canelo Alvarez in their upcoming fight in Saudi Arabia. The match will decide who gets to keep all four world championships in the super middleweight division.
Scull plans to tell Alvarez "you are my idol" after he wins. He sees Canelo as someone to look up to in boxing, even though they'll face each other in the ring.
"When the time comes, when we get out of the ring and I beat him, I'm going to tell him: 'you are my idol'," Scull said.
The Cuban fighter knows this is a big deal. He's never been in such an important fight before. At first, he thought it would be tough to go up against someone he respects so much.
"We haven't done fights of this great level.... At the beginning I saw it complicated, to see a referent but it is a combat sport, there has to be a winner," Scull explained.
Alvarez lost the IBF title earlier when he didn't show up for a fight against Scull. Now, Scull holds that belt while Canelo still has the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles. Their fight in Saudi Arabia will decide who gets to walk away with all four belts.
This match puts Scull in an interesting spot. He respects Alvarez but also wants to beat him. It's a clash between admiration and ambition, with four world titles on the line.
