Chris Eubank Jr's got a big fight coming up against Conor Benn on April 26 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It's a match that's been a long time coming, originally set for October 2022 but called off when Benn failed a drug test.
This fight's got history written all over it. Back in the 90s, their dads, Chris Eubank Sr. and Nigel Benn, were the talk of British boxing. They fought twice, with Eubank winning once and the other ending in a split draw. Those fights were huge, and now the sons are picking up where their fathers left off.
Eubank Jr's not just looking at Benn, though. He's got his eyes on an even bigger prize: Canelo Alvarez. In a recent chat, Eubank Jr said:
"I do think that is the next logical fight."
He's not wrong. Canelo's the big dog in the division, set to defend his titles against Jaime MunguÃa in May. A fight with him would be massive for Eubank Jr.
Turki Alalshikh, a key player in setting up big fights in Saudi Arabia, seems to be on board. Eubank Jr mentioned:
"This could put me in position to get in the ring with Canelo, which would be amazing."
But Eubank Jr knows he can't get ahead of himself. He's focused on Benn right now, saying:
"This fight has to happen first. Then we talk about Canelo. But the idea's already in motion."
Interestingly, Eubank Jr reckons the Benn fight's a bigger deal in the UK than a Canelo matchup would be:
"In the UK, it's probably bigger than a Canelo fight. People who don't even follow boxing know about this fight. It's on another level here."
If Eubank Jr pulls off a win against Benn, it could open up a whole new chapter in his career. It might even boost British boxing's standing on the world stage. But first things first – he's got to get past Benn on April 26.
