Dmitry Bivol has become the undisputed light-heavyweight champion of the world. He beat Artur Beterbiev in a rematch by majority decision, showing more skill and grit this time around.
In their first fight, Beterbiev won on points. It was the first time Bivol had gone the distance with the big-punching fighter. But Bivol turned things around in the rematch. He was more active and finished strong, securing the win and all the belts in the division.
Now, Bivol has a choice to make. He can either defend his titles against mandatory challenger David Benavidez or go for a third fight with Beterbiev. Many fans want to see the trilogy bout, and it's got backing from Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season.
But the WBC has ordered Bivol to face Benavidez next. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman spoke to Tha Boxing Voice about what might happen:
"If Bivol decides to vacate the WBC Championship, then Benavidez becomes champion. He's interim champion right now, he would become world champion of the WBC."
Sulaiman also revealed some interesting numbers about the purses on offer:
"He made 2.7 million in the rematch against Beterbiev and now he's being offered 8 million to fight Benavidez, so it's a great opportunity for Bivol as well … I hope Bivol and Benavidez will fight."
Benavidez's team has made it clear they won't take any step-aside deals. That means Bivol has three options: fight Benavidez, have a third clash with Beterbiev, or give up his WBC belt.
Bivol's expected to take some time to rest before making his decision. Whatever he chooses, it's sure to be a big fight for boxing fans to look forward to.
