Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez might fight in September, but not everyone thinks it's a good idea. Juan Manuel Marquez, a former Mexican boxer, says it's "a terrible idea" for Crawford to move up two weight classes for this bout.
Canelo will defend his super middleweight world titles against William Scull on May 3. After that, he might face Crawford in Las Vegas. Crawford, known as "Bud," usually fights at welterweight. He'd have to jump up to 168 pounds for this match.
Marquez doesn't like the idea. He told reporters:
"I don't like the fight because, in boxing, we have divisions. Terence Crawford is a good fighter in lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and super welterweight."
Marquez points out that Crawford looked slow and weak when he fought Madrimov at 154 pounds. He thinks going up two more divisions to 168 pounds will be too hard for Crawford.
Jaron Ennis, another boxer, thinks Canelo has a better chance of winning. He gives Canelo odds of 60-40 or even 70-30, mainly because Canelo has more experience fighting bigger opponents at that weight.
Crawford's getting ready by sparring with Lester Martinez. But some say Martinez's style is too different and slow to help Crawford prepare for Canelo.
Crawford is known for his good defense and combination punching. He'll likely use all the criticism as motivation to surprise everyone in Las Vegas.
The fight isn't official yet. We'll probably hear more about it after Canelo's May 3 bout with Scull. If it happens, it'll be a big test for Crawford, moving up from welterweight to super middleweight to face one of boxing's biggest stars.
