Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez might be the greatest Mexican boxer ever, according to Hall of Famer Roberto Duran. The four-weight world champion shared his thoughts on Canelo's legacy in a recent interview.
Canelo has become the biggest star in boxing. He's lost only twice in 66 fights - to Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol. He's never been knocked down or stopped. He's won world titles in four different weight classes. In May, he'll have a chance to become a two-time undisputed champion at super middleweight when he faces William Scull.
Duran, who won world titles in four weight classes himself and fought over five decades, praised Canelo in an interview with Fight Hub TV.
"I would put him as one of the best that has ever come out of Mexico. Might be tough for some to swallow. But I put him as one of the best Mexico has ever had up to this point, because after Canelo there hasn't been anyone that has come up yet. He's the man of the hour, and giving Mexico fame."
Duran didn't hold back in his praise for the Mexican superstar.
"There's no one else. Nobody else. For me Canelo is the best there is right now. There's no one like Canelo."
When asked if Canelo could go down as the greatest Mexican fighter ever, Duran said:
"Why not? Why not? Fans say no way… because he's not on the level of Chavez Sr. I'll just shut up and not say anything."
Canelo's place among Mexico's all-time greats is a hot topic among boxing fans. Many argue he's not on the level of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. But Duran's words carry weight given his own legendary status in the sport.
After the Scull fight in May, Canelo is set for a mega fight in September. He'll face Terence Crawford, who's moving up two weight classes for the bout. It's another chance for Canelo to add to his already impressive legacy.
