Errol Spence believes Terence Crawford can beat Canelo Alvarez in their upcoming super-middleweight fight. The former welterweight champion shared his thoughts on the potential bout set for September in Las Vegas.
Crawford's looking to jump up two weight classes to challenge Canelo for the undisputed super-middleweight title. The fight will happen if Canelo gets past William Scull in May for the IBF belt.
Spence, who lost to Crawford last year, backs his former rival. He told Fight Hub TV:
"I'll be going for 'Bud', I'll be going for him. I don't know if he's going to win or lose but I'll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off."
Spence thinks Crawford's motivation will play a big part. He said:
"He's chasing greatness so why not. Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can't 'Bud' do it."
Crawford's no stranger to making history. He's already the undisputed champion at welterweight and light-welterweight. Now he's eyeing Canelo's WBC, WBA, and WBO super-middleweight belts.
The fight's got people talking about Crawford's power at 168 pounds. Can he hurt Canelo at this weight? Legendary trainer Ronnie Shields has weighed in on that very question.
Crawford showed his power when he beat Spence last year. He dominated the fight, dropping Spence several times before winning by 9th round stoppage.
Canelo's got to get past Scull first, but if he does, we're in for a massive fight in September.
