Shakur Stevenson might need to change his style to beat Gervonta Davis or Lamont Roach. The WBC lightweight champion has got everyone talking about his next move in the division.
Stevenson won his last fight in February. He beat Josh Padley with a ninth-round TKO on the Beterbiev vs. Bivol 2 card. People know him as a tactical genius who fights with a measured approach.
But veteran trainer Abel Sanchez thinks Stevenson needs to step it up. Sanchez, who used to coach former middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin, shared his thoughts with FightHub TV.
"He's gonna have to win rounds. He just doesn't do enough to win rounds decisively. Just not busy enough at times and too perfect. These guys are gonna do what's necessary to win rounds."
Sanchez believes Stevenson must be more assertive and active in the ring. He says the champ's current style might not work against Davis or Roach.
"Shakur has to be a little more forceful, I think, to deal with these guys. I don't think that his approach can stay the way it is now and be able to deal with a Lamont or with a Gervonta."
Davis, known as "Tank," holds the WBA lightweight title. He's one of boxing's most dangerous knockout artists. But his last fight on March 1 ended in a controversial majority draw against Roach. It was the first blemish on Davis' record.
Roach proved he's an elite fighter by pushing Davis to a draw. Now, Davis and Roach look ready for a rematch.
If Stevenson makes the changes Sanchez suggests, he could soon find himself in the mix with these top fighters. The lightweight division is heating up, and fans can't wait to see what happens next.
